UNIVERSITY of the Philippines got an early goal and took its third straight victory at the expense of University of Santo Tomas, 1-0, in the UAAP Men's football tournament on Sunday at FEU FERN Diliman.
Azkals stalwart Marco Casambre scored his maiden goal in the UAAP in the 14th minute to put the defending champion ahead.
The young defender took advantage of a scramble from the corner as he beat everyone to the ball for a goal.
It was pretty much a defensive struggle for both teams with the Fighting Maroons displaying patience with their build-ups while the Golden Booters looked to counter with every chance they got.
The contrast of styles favored the Maroons as they held on to the lone goal without being really threatened by UST.
UP improved to second place with 10 points, one ahead of idle Far Eastern University.
The Golden Booters on the other hand came crashing back to earth after finally getting their first win last Thursday.
