THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has accepted the resignation of Terry Butcher as head coach of the Azkals national team.
In a statement posted on its website, the PFF said it will continue with the team’s preparation for the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup despite the shock development.
“The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) accepts with understanding the announcement of Coach Terry Butcher not to proceed as head coach of the National Team of the Philippines. We wish Mr. Butcher good luck. The PFF will continue with the necessary team preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 this November and the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 in January 2019,” said the PFF in a statement.
Butcher, in a statement to Press Association Sport, apologized for not pushing through with the plan to become the head coach of the Azkals.
“I’m sorry to announce that I will not be proceeding in the role as head coach of the Philippines national football team. Across recent months, I’ve been intensely engaged with many people to thoroughly understand and prepare for this exciting challenge.
“The vital issue for myself was to carefully build a robust plan to meet the football ambitions of the national team and ‘do the country proud,’” said Butcher.
Butcher wishes the Azkals the best in its two competitions in the next months.
“I remain convinced that the Philippines has great potential and I’m impressed with the high-calibre people that I’ve had the pleasure to meet,” he said.
