THE Philippine men’s football team has slipped four places down to 147th in the latest Fifa (International Football Association) rankings update released on Wednesday.

The Azkals’ drop from their highest ranking ever in November may be attributed to their losses in the recent Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup - a 2-1 defeat to Thailand in the group stage and a 1-0 setback at the hands of Singapore in the second leg of the semifinals.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami had hoped the national team would Southeast Asia's top-ranked side by the end of the year, but falling short in their bid to make a historic Finals appearance in the Suzuki Cup has apparently stymied the team's climb up the rankings.

Vietnam remains the region’s top team, even climbing seven spots to 131st despite failing to enter the Suzuki Cup semifinals. Vietnam also lost to the Azkals in the group stage.

Thailand overtook the Philippines as the second-best country in Southeast Asia as the Suzuki Cup finalist moved up a notable 16 spots to 136th.

Spain continues to reign as the world’s best, followed by Germany, and Argentina. Italy and Colombia rounded out the Top Five.
