ATENEO survived a tough challenge from bitter rival La Salle, 1-0, to keep an unblemished slate in the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament in front of its home crowd at the Moro Lorenzo field on Thursday.
The win moved Ateneo further up the table with 12 points as La Salle absorbed its first loss in three games and remained at the fourth spot with four points.
Jarvey Gayoso continued his scoring tear as he scored the only goal of the day in the 36th minute--a beauty of a strike which showcased the young star's technique and composure.
Receiving the ball on the left flank, Gayoso's first touch flicked the ball past his marker before sending a missile past the keeper and into the side net.
"It feels really good to win this one. It's a prestigious match. I'm just happy that I'm able to contribute on the scoresheet in this game,"Gayoso said.
From then, the battle was mostly fought in the midfield with La Salle looking to build plays through passes while Ateneo threatening to counter with every chance it gets.
La Salle got its biggest chance to equalize in the 91st minute when Luis Montelibano was left unmarked in the box on the set piece.
Thankfully for Ateneo, Alex Arcilla was there to save the day as he parried away the header and preserved all three points for his squad.
