PHILIPPINE Army guns for the first quarterfinal berth in Group D as it takes on Sta. Lucia Sunday in the United Football League Cup at the University of Makati pitch.
Fresh from a 1-1 stalemate against rival Air Force last Tuesday, the first-running Troopers enter their final match of the elimination round hoping to pad their seven-point total and widen their gap from the rest of the field.
A victory for the Troopers in their 6 p.m. meeting with the Realtors will give them outright entry to the Round of 16 that starts on Nov. 6.
Although bannered by national team members Ed Sacapaño, Nestorio Margarse Jr., and Roel Gener, the Troopers leaned on an early goal by Laurence Bedua against the Airmen, who equalized with a 46th minute strike from Ian Araneta.
In another Group D encounter two hours later, Stallion likewise hopes to solidify its chance of making the quarterfinal round as it faces cellar-dwelling Agila.
Spanish import Rufino Sanches fired all but one of Stallion’s goals in it 6-0 drubbing of Sta. Lucia last week.
With Stallion sporting three points in two matches, a victory would vault them past defending champion Air Force, which has four points for second place.
Nomads, meanwhile, collides with Mendiola in the curtain raiser at 4 o’clock, hoping to strengthen its bid to make the first quarterfinal berth in Group C.
