ROLANDO Espina completed the Zarks Ultimate Run 500 on Saturday evening at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.
Espina navigated the 500 kilometer-challenge with a time of 102 hours and 15 minutes. The run started on Tuesday at Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and finished in Quezon City in what is said to be the longest ultra-marathon in Southeast Asia.
Also finishing the race with Espina is Rex Brillantes and Jivee Tolentino in 105 hours and nine minutes.
“Relieved. I was pretty much running and walking for the last 28 hours non-stop so talagang antok na. Relieved, antok and I’m just so happy,” said Espina who also conquered the Manila-Baguio 250 kilometer run earlier this month.
The key is preparation, according to Espina.
“I would say it’s long. It was just so long but with the right planning, if you know the route and pinagaralan mo rin yung strategy mo, you’re winning half of the battle already,” he added.
“It’s just a matter of belief, and yung knowledge narin. It’s gonna be an advantage sa akin kung pinagaralan mo.”
There’s still no concrete plans now for a 1000-kilometer run but Espina is certainly up to the challenge.
“I don’t know kung matutuloy pero I’m up for it, definitely, why not hopefully next year.”
Mental strength is important in completing such courses, Espina said.
“Ultra-marathon naman it’s more mental. It’s your will, it’s the grit na makakapagtapos sayo,” Espina continued.
“It’s normal, your body naman when you’re tired your body will say ‘what are you doing? You need to rest,’ sa Ultra-Marathon you don’t do that. You tell your mind to shut up cause you want to run and finish this race.”
