TOXIC FANDOM should occupy no space in esports—or any other platform.
In the world of Esports, and in any competitive scene, it's high time we put an end to the bashing and hatred. The spirit of a community should be one of unwavering support. While fans may see the glitz and glamor on camera, there's a lot that remains hidden behind the scenes.
In this era of freedom of expression, it's essential to exercise caution and empathy when sharing one's thoughts. The people involved in Esports, be they players, managers, coaches, staff, casters, or fans, are far from flawless. They are, after all, human beings striving to give their best for their audience.
One example was Bridgitte “Brigida” Ramos’ mistake after ECHO won against RSG Philippines in the lower bracket semi-finals match. She made a mistake by announcing that the Orcas booked their M5 World Championship ticket despite still having a rematch against Blacklist International.
Mistakes are an inherent part of the human experience, and it's crucial to remember that nobody can be perfect enough to meet every expectation placed upon them. What unites these diverse individuals, day in and day out, is their unwavering commitment to giving 100% to their craft.
Often, we don't see the personal struggles they face as they maintain their professionalism in front of the cameras and fans. But beneath the surface, they, too, experience the same emotions and challenges that any person would. They are not immune to the pressures and hardships that accompany their dedication to Esports.
No one has the right to hurl harsh words at individuals who are simply doing their jobs. It's unrealistic to expect perfection 24/7.
Another case in point is ECHO’s Country Manager, Mitch Liwanag, who received death threats from fans who demanded Tristan “Yawi” Cabrera play instead of Jaypee “JayPee” Dela Cruz.
Fans have no idea of the internal dynamics between ECHO's players, which led to Yawi's benching for the good part of the regular season and the MPL-PH Season 12 Playoffs. Death threats certainly have no space in any forum, and should not be tolerated.
We can express our thoughts as we are entitled to criticize the mistakes of others but we should always think first. At the end of the day, the people on the receiving end of bashing and online persecution are also humans who feel the same way as most people will.
Extending one’s support, constructive feedback, and understanding to all those who make up the world of Esports makes the community healthy as only we could make the community a non-toxic one.
