TNC will step back from competitive Dota 2

A sad day for nostalgic Dota 2 fans

LONG BEFORE BLACKLIST INTERNATIONAL's MLBB squad became the bastion for Filipino esports, it was TNC's Dota 2 roster that inspired the country, all thanks to that iconic moment in The International 2016 when against all odds, the Phoenix slayed heavy favorites OG to produce the Miracle of TI6.

From there, all eyes were trained on the Filipino Dota 2 squad, who eventually made headlines for winning the 2016 World Electronic Sports Games.

But sadly for fans who have grown to fall in love with TNC's rise from the ashes, the team has decided to forego their DPC 2023 campaign. The announcements were made on the team's social media pages.

TNC CEO and founder, Eric Redulfin, expressed that it was no easy task to let go of their Dota 2 bid for next year.

"This is a very tough and difficult decision. TNC Dota 2 will not be participating in the upcoming DPC season. The organization will take a break in the competitive scene and support the landscape from the sidelines," said Redulfin.

"There were a lot of discussions, negotiations, and moving parts to make this happen. Unfortunately, this plan didn't come to life for TNC."

As he went on, he reflected on all the achievements that the team accomplished in the Dota 2 scene.

"We have come a long way, starting from competing in cybercafes all the way to the biggest Dota 2 stage, from not qualifying in most of the LAN qualifiers to winning WESG, ESL, and major championships, and giving glory to our country.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the esports community, Dota fans, to all our previous and current sponsors, our friends and family who were there to cheer us, especially Acer Predator for their full support during our ups and downs until our last decision that we've made."

And like the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes, Mr. Redulfin assured fans that the team will return.

"Again this isn't the end of our journey, we will continue our TI dream, to bring home the Aegis. TNC will rise again! Salamat!"

    Has TNC fallen off?

Prior to the team's announcement, TNC has been showing signs of a decline. After an impressive showing in The International 2019 and a championship run in the MDL Chengdu Major, the pieces started crumbling afterwards.

By 2021, the team failed to reach the main stage of The International 2021, as they were beaten by Fnatic in the grand finals of the Southeast Asian qualifiers. This became the first time that TNC failed to reach the main stage since TI6.

Afterwards, TNC tried desperately to proceed to the Major Stages in 2022, but their attempts were futile. A last place finish, in the first tour in Division 1 and a string of mediocre performances in Division II, sealed their fate.
