TRUE champions are gracious, disciplined, and humble—and this is exactly what Team Liquid PH’s Coach Rodel “Arsy” Cruz proved after clinching the MPL Philippines Season 16 title against Aurora Gaming last Sunday.
Every championship match writes its story in tears—of heartbreak or joy—but Coach Arsy, who had every reason to boast about his team’s flawless 4-0 victory and tactical brilliance, instead chose to show great respect to the Cavalry’s rival and stood up for Aurora, who were facing an unforgiving storm of hate online.
Some fans pointed to Kenneth “Yue” Tadeo’s costly misplay on Cecilion in Game 4, where Alston “Sanji” Pabico’s masterful Diversion caught Aurora off guard and sealed the championship for Team Liquid.
Others placed the blame on the coaching staff, but the harshest of them all—Aurora was called “chokers” again for faltering when it mattered most, a painful reminder of past seasons and now Season 16.
“Una sa lahat, sa lahat ng nangba-bash, hindi lang sa Aurora, walang may deserve na ma-bash kahit sinong tao," he said.
"May mga bagay sila na pinagdadaanan. Sobrang taas ng respeto ng lahat ng teams sa Aurora — lalo sa standings nila, mechanics, technicalities, strategies. Hindi naman sila makakarating sa top 1 kung hindi nila deserve mapunta doon."
Aurora showcased unmatched dominance all season long, racking up a remarkable 15-match winning streak from the regular season to playoffs that fueled massive expectations for another MPL title run.
However, when the spotlight was brightest, the squad faltered in the grand finale against Team Liquid, sparking a barrage of toxic remarks from disappointed fans and doubters.
In the aftermath of Team Liquid PH’s 4-0 sweep against Aurora Gaming in the MPL Philippines Season 16 Grand Finals, while many celebrated the defending champions, others turned their frustration toward Aurora—a reaction that didn’t sit right with the veteran coach.
“Ulitin ko, sana dumating ‘yung araw na mahinto na ‘yang mga bashing na ‘yan kasi binibigay namin ‘yung full effort at sakripisyo namin dito — family, loved ones, lahat — para lang maibigay namin full potential namin every single day,” he added.
Beyond the hype, rivalry, and fiery exchanges that fans live for, these players have great respect for each other even when fate decides to pit them against one another in the pursuit of greatness.
Coach Arsy’s message served as a powerful reminder that esports, at its core, thrives on respect, dedication, and passion—not hate. Even in defeat, Aurora’s journey this season stands as proof of their growth and grit, earning great respect from fellow pros as well.
