Esports is shaping up to be the 30th Southeast Asian Games gold mine that everyone believed it would be.

The Philippines' national esports team, more commonly known as Sibol, thrilled the home crowd during the groups stages of the StarCraft II and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang events held at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

StarCraft representative Caviar "EnDerr" Acampado swept (5-0) Group B to earn an outright winners' finals appearance — one step closer to the coveted gold medal. Teammate Justin "Nuks" Santos, for his part, salvaged a trip to the playoffs after finishing fourth (2-3) in the other group.

All eyes are on EnDerr, as he faces Vietnam's Tran "MeomaikA" Hong Phuc, who also trampled Group A. This will be the second time this year that the two are crossing paths; in the championship round of the World Electronic Sport Games (WESG) SEA Qualifier a month ago, MeomaikA took down the Filipino, 3-1.

Meanwhile, Sibol's Mobile Legends squad didn't embarrass its local fans with a second-place finish (4-2) in Group B.

Jeniel "Haze" Bata-Anon, Angelo Kyle "Pheww" Arcangel, Allan Sancio "Lusty" Castromayor, Karl Gabriel "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno, Kenneth Jiane "Kenji" Villa, Carlito "Ribo" Jr., and Jason Rafael "Jay" Torculas took a drew against regional powerhouse Indonesia and decimated hapless Lao PDR in a pair of sub-10-minute games.

The Pinoy all-star team, however, faced a tough Thai wall in the last matchup of the day and were blasted in a just over 10 minutes in the opener. A refocused Sibol ML squad bounced back hard and destroyed the Thais, 14-5, in a 12-minute Game 2 to take a draw and advance to the playoffs.

On the other hand, it was a different story altogether for both of PH's Hearthstone bets, as Jacinta "Jia" Dee and Dustin "WaningMoon" Mangalubnan failed to move past the group stage.
