IS ESPORTS on the verge of becoming an Olympic event?
With esports being involved in the SEA Games and Asian Games, and with the recent announcements from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), perhaps the gaming scene will slowly make its way into the Olympics.
Just recently, the Executive Board of the IOC proposed the creation of "Olympic Esports Games" to the 142nd IOC Session, which will take place during the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
IOC Members will get a chance to vote on the proposal.
Looking back at the esports journey
“With the creation of Olympic Esports Games, the IOC is taking a major step forward and is keeping up with the pace of the digital revolution. We are very excited how enthusiastically the esports community represented in our Esports Commission has engaged with this initiative. This is further proof of the attractivity of the Olympic brand and the values it stands for,” started IOC President Thomas Bach.
He added: “With respect to esports, our values are and remain the red line that we will never cross."
The IOC first stepped into the esports scene back in the Esports Forum in 2018, which was held in Lausanne. Afterwards many changes took place.
The IOC Esports Commission was formed then in 2021, the organization developed the Olympic Virtual Series.
Eventually there were other Olympic-related events that were conducted such as the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore, which happened last June 2023.
