BEHIND every woman’s success is a story written of sacrifice, silent battles, and perseverance—just like MPL Philippines host Claudine “Odin” Tayco, whose journey was far from instant—one that required a once-in-a-lifetime risk many would have been too afraid to take.

The proud Caviteña only dreamed of this life, but she never fought for it all alone, raised by a single mother who loved her unconditionally and carried by people who stood by her through her lowest moments.

“Your very own, Odin”—an iconic spiel from the MPL host, but this time, the spotlight shifts to the untold chapters of her life.

It Takes a Woman to Build a Woman

Though born in the United States, Odin was raised in the humble town of Indang, Cavite, where she grew up as the youngest of four siblings.

Indang is more than just her hometown, it is where her aspirations and identity as a woman took form.

At the heart of Odin’s journey is her mother, Cora Espiritu Tayco, whose love and sacrifices shaped everything she is today. When Odin was six, her father passed away due to a heart attack —marking the moment everything changed for their family.

It left her mother to raise them alone — giving up her job in the United States to become a full-time parent, selling vegetables and meals to support her children’s education.

Life back then was not easy, but Odin recalls those days with a smile.

She remembers how her mother would divide a small serving of chicken nuggets among four children, and how she once crafted a headband from notebook wire wrapped in fabric—simple acts of love that stayed with her through the years.

In high school, Odin designed tarpaulins as a graphic artist, but when she entered college and pursued Information Technology, she found herself unprepared for the world of coding that awaited her.

More than talent, it was grit that carried her through—eventually graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Information Technology at Cavite State University Indang Campus.

Taking on both roles, her mother gave everything until Odin and her siblings were ready to face the world—and even now, Odin finds it hard to fully express her gratitude.

“Wala talaga akong naging father figure growing up.

So, ako nagkukusa ako.” she added.

At every stage of Odin’s life, her mother stood beside her—never dictating her path, but trusting her to choose it—even when it meant stepping into the uncertain world of esports.

All or Nothing

With a dazzling smile, contagious energy, and professionalism on stage, Odin makes hosting MPL look effortless—but it all began with a simple vision during the pandemic.

Like many stuck at home, Odin grew to love Mobile Legends, spending nights grinding until sunrise—often earning scoldings from her mother for staying up later instead of resting.

She soon became an avid MPL viewer, watching pros build greatness and casters bring life to the league—a stage she quietly began to see herself in.

“Tapos, nung nanonood ako ng MPL, ang sinabi ko sa sarili ko, “Gusto ko makapasok diyan!

Hindi ko alam kung paano, pero nakikita ko ‘yung sarili ko one day na nandiyan ako.” she recalled, holding on to a vision she didn’t yet know how to reach.

That conviction would soon push her toward a decision that would change the direction of her life.

With no professional experience in casting or hosting, Odin took a shot at the MPL Philippines Caster Search 2022. She submitted an audition video, initially aiming for an analyst role—drawing confidence from her background as a data analyst.

Step by step, she climbed from the top 32 through online interviews to the top 16, where a simulated casting pushed her beyond her limits, relying only on instinct and what she had observed as a viewer.

During that time, Odin was already balancing a full-time IT job at Accenture with modeling gigs, livestreaming, and content creation.

Impressive as it was, the selection committee questioned how she could fit casting into her already packed schedule. Still, she was firm in moving forward, even at the cost of leaving her full-time job behind.

“And sinabi ko lang, ‘I'm willing to risk it all for this. Kaya ko pong mag-resign.’ Sobrang firm ko sa sinabi ko to the point na naramdaman nila na gusto ko talaga itong spot na ‘to,” Odin remembered.

Although she did not win the Caster Search 2022, everything still fell into place, and Odin did not walk away empty-handed.

That turning point opened a door she had only ever watched from afar. She was offered a role as a courtside reporter.

The Price of Chasing Dreams

Breaking into the MPL is far from a fairy tale—it is a trial by fire, where expectations are relentless and excellence is always demanded.

Odin became a courtside reporter in MPL PH Season 11, interviewing passionate fans and players—bringing out stories often unseen on the main stage.

In an exclusive SPIN.ph interview, Odin shared that she felt stiff during her first few weeks, especially after an unexpected rotation placed her at the casting desk alongside talents Burrito and Wolf in MPL PH Season 11 Week 8 Day 1.

In her debut season, Odin carried not only the pressure of live broadcasts and public scrutiny, but also the weight of personal struggles—yet she continued to show up.

Not everyone was fond of Odin, and harsh criticism flooded online, with comments questioning her ability to hype games, translate in-game moments to viewers, and provide valuable insights.

Odin could endure it—but what hurt most was knowing her mother was reading those comments.

Before her MPL casting debut, Odin was already battling personal struggles—moments that made showing up hard. But she held on to the life she wanted—and chose, again and again, to keep going.

“Napapanaginipan ko siya na parang I had to go through that ng ilang araw, ilang sleepless nights. Nado-double guess ko na or question ko ‘yung sarili ko kung worthy ba talaga ako dito or baka nga tama sila,” Odin said.

“‘Yung nanay ko mahilig pa ‘yun magbasa dati ng comments sa mismong page ng MPL. Ang sinabi ko, hayaan mo lang. Siyempre, napakasakit nun sa isang ina na ginaganun yung anak niya. Kaya ako, hindi ko pinaparamdam sa kaniya na nasasaktan ako,” she added while holding back tears.

The hate weighed heavily on Odin back then, but it never outweighed the love and encouragement she received from her loved ones, friends, and co-talents who stood by her.

Though new to the role, Odin said she never felt like a burden to her co-talents—instead, they became her steady anchor in moments of doubt.

What stayed with her most were the words of wisdom from her friend Lyn Quezada-Gaddi, wife of co-talent Burrito, who reminded Odin that she had earned her rightful place in MPL.

“Ang sinabi niya sa akin, ‘Odin, nandiyan ka kasi kinuha ka nila. Nandiyan ka kasi may nakita sila sayo na hindi pa nakikita ng mga tao. Hindi mo binayaran ‘yung spot mo diyan. Wala kang ginamit na connection. Lahat ng meron ka ngayon ay dahil sinubukan mo. Through your hard work. Through your potential,’” Odin shared.

Odin spent most of her life proving that no force is greater than a determined woman chasing the future she once only imagined—the same dreamer who endured exhausting commutes and left home at 4 a.m. for a 10 a.m. call time.

To make it to her gigs, Odin would first take a tricycle from their barangay in Indang before boarding a bus bound for Metro Manila—a journey that alone lasted nearly two and a half hours. Carrying wardrobes she personally prepared for some of her events, she would then ride a taxi or booking service from PITX to her final destination.

Even now, despite having her own car and the option to stay in hotels or Airbnbs in Metro Manila, Odin still prefers making the trip back home to Cavite to be with her mother.

Perhaps that is also why she connects deeply with fans who travel long distances just to see her and the MPL action. Having once been the person enduring the commute herself, Odin meets them with warmth, gratitude, and the same genuine smile that carried her through years of sacrifice.

Finding Her Voice

Odin blossomed from a courtside reporter into one of MPL’s recognizable hosts— a role where every word, delivery, and mistake is magnified under bright stage lights.

She didn’t find it easy to be authentic when she first became a host. Following in the footsteps of seasoned personalities like Mara Aquino, she found herself caught in comparison—tempted to follow a familiar mold.

But behind the scenes, her co-talents and management guided her with a simple reminder: be yourself. It became the reassurance she needed to stop chasing expectations and finally trust her own voice.

In embracing that truth, Odin learned that connection doesn’t come from imitation, but from sincerity—and that people would embrace her more once they saw who she truly is.

“Your very own, Odin.”

More than just a catchphrase, it reflects the kind of host she hopes to be remembered as—someone who belongs not above the community, but alongside it.

“Ever since I started in gaming kasi gusto kong maalala nila na I'm for the people. Hindi ako magsha-shine ng ako lang. Hindi ko kine-credit ‘yung sarili kong sikap lang kung ano man ang marating ko sa buhay. It's always about them helping me and supporting me. Kaya iyon ‘yung gusto kong maalala nila na nandito ako,” Odin explained.

Odin also gave advice to all the aspiring talents hoping that one day they would live their dreams of getting into MPL.

“Shoot your shot. Katulad ko, I started without any experience, without skills. Someone told me, ‘You know what makes you stand out? You have that grit.’ Maraming talented sa paligid but what makes you stand out is yung pagkagusto mo, ‘yung hunger mo na magawa ‘yung gusto mo at matupad lahat ng goals mo. Huwag kayong panghinaan ng loob. the universe will tell you that you have a spot and it will just take time para makita mo yun.” Odin expressed.

Her journey was never perfect and never easy.

But through every doubt, every setback, and every risk she chose to take, Odin kept showing up.

Because in the end, success wasn’t built in a single moment—it was forged in the decision to keep going, even when it was hardest to stay.
