Dota whale spends P50k to buy levels on International 2018 battle pass

Dec 9, 2018

MANY games nowadays adhere to the "freemium" model: free-to-play on the surface, and loaded with tempting shortcuts, rewards, and cosmetics on the inside. A lot of players can get by spending nothing to moderate amounts in-game, while others lose control and end up spending way more than buying a non-free game would have ever cost. We call these people "whales."

In Dota, the freemium model at work is best represented by the yearly International tournament and its "battle pass" or compendium. You gain levels and unlock corresponding rewards (skins, voicelines, weapon cosmetics, etc.) in the pass by playing and completing objectives-which takes time and effort. Or you can take a monetary shortcut.

This is the story of a Dota whale, one who spent P50,000 buying levels for the International 2018 battle pass.

We heard you spent P50,000 during the last TI, what were you after?

Last year, di ako bumili. Ngayon hinabol ko yung Aegis na item and yung Roshan na figurine-pag level 1000 ka sa Battlepass magkakaroon ka ng Aegis, then Roshan at 2000.

You can spend a couple hundred to gain tens of levels, but did you know you needed 50K to hit 2000?

Did you buy 2000 levels in one go?

So why not just go one time, big time?

In case you wanted proof, there are receipts

Did you also spend big amounts on the previous compendiums?

Oo, pero di ganon kalaki. Mga P3-5k lang ata or less.

So what is your day job exactly if we may ask?

Wala, tambay lang ako, ha ha! Nag-hahanap buhay lang ako sa mga sideline. Tulad ng betting sa Dota and CS:GO.

Are you a rich kid?

Hindi, kaya nga nag-trabaho ako call center dati kasi wala pera eh. Ngayon lang medyo may blessings na dumating so gusto ko lang talaga yung experience para no regrets. Maganda din kasi yung collectors item, malay natin mag-mahal ten years from now.

You don't see that level every day, that's some major farm

Did you find it weird spending that big though?

Where else would you have spent the cash if not on a Rosh?

Nag-travel malamang, bili ng ticket to Japan, ha ha!

Was the money a big deal for you or was it all really just luho cash?

Oo, malaking bagay talaga yun. Lalo na mga 2-3 years from now maiisip ko talaga sana ginamit ko nalang din sa ibang bagay yun. Pero sa tagal ko na din kasi sa Dota (since 2005) di ko pa na-experience magka-item na ganon or gumastos ng malaki so kaya ko rin ginawa yun.
