Dragon boat athletes on floating status, says PSC

    Jul 22, 2013
“Right now, they (dragon boat athletes) are on floating status until a decision by the arbitration committee is made ... Hopefully, this week we will know if they will be reinstated or terminated but right now, they are on hold,” said PSC chai

DRAGON boat athletes and coaches who have been terminated by the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation (PCKF) are now on floating status, according to the Philippine Sports Commission.

PSC chairman Ritchie Garcia said they will await the decision made by the newly-formed Philippine Olympic Committee arbitration committee before deciding on whether the athletes and coaches will be stripped on their monthly allowances.

The arbitration committee was formed to dig deeper into the issue after several dragon boat athletes expressed their displeasure over the PCKF leadership led by acting president Jonne Go and national head coach Len Escollante.

The PCKF issued a letter to the PSC saying it was terminating 25 athletes and three coaches from the national pool due to “gross disrespect.”

But Garcia said that they will be holding their allowances until such time that the arbitration committee has made a decision.

“Right now, they are on floating status until a decision by the arbitration committee is made,” said Garcia. “Hopefully, this week we will know if they will be reinstated or terminated but right now, they are on hold.”

Garcia said that the issue hounding dragon boat could affect its participation in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar. He is also hoping that the issue will be resolved soon.

“Definitely, it will affect even the sending of the team. We may end up without a representative for dragon boat. Definitely, the athletes and the coaches have signified their intention to practice. But they can’t practice. This is something that can’t be delayed for a week,” said Garcia.
