The Philippine dragon boat team stamped its class in Georgia.

THE Philippines collected its fifth gold medal to capture the overall title at the close of the 2018 International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Dragon Boat Championship in Gainesville, Georgia.

The Filipino paddlers captured the 10-seater senior men’s 200-meter race to add to the team’s collection of mints in this year’s competition that also saw the team win two silver medals.

The Philippines surpassed its five-gold, one-silver tally in the same event in 2012 in Milan, Italy.

The national paddlers timed 47.39 seconds in the final event of the four-day competition held at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park, beating Italy (49.58) and Hungary (49.87).

The members of the team in the event are Mark Jhon Frias, Hermie Macaranas, Ojay Fuentes, John Lester delos Santos, Oliver Manaig, Reymart Nevado, Lee Robin Santos, Jordan de Guia, Roger Masbate, and John Paul Selencio.

The team also had Patricia Bustamante as drummer and Maribeth Caranto as steersman.

“I was a part of that team that did it in Italy. I knew these kids are special, so I’m not surprised when they beat the previous record,” said national coach Diomedes Manalo in Filipino.

The Philippines also won gold in the 10-seater and 20-seater senior mixed 200m races, and the small boat and big boat in the senior mixed 500m.

The silver medals came from the big boat senior mixed 2000m and the small boat men’s 500m.

“I’m proud to say that the Philippines is the world champion in dragon boat racing,’’ said Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation president Jonne Go, who also thanked the team’s chief backer Go For Gold, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, and the Philippine Sports Commission.
