THE PHILIPPINE Dragon Boat Federation-backed team has set a modest goal of two gold medals in the International Dragon Boat Federation World Dragon Boat Championships on July 24 to 28.
The team left for Hungary on Monday with a conservative approach for this year’s edition following a haul of five gold medals two years ago.
“Dalawa lang muna ang kaya,” PDBF president Marcia Cristobal said. “We will do our best in bringing honor to the country.”
Cristobal also said they will compete in the women’s event for the first time aside from the men’s and mixed events in the standard boat where they have been traditionally been participating.
“We will test also ‘yung tinatawag na Pinay power,” said Cristobal. “Hopefully, we will come up with a medal.”
Cristobal sees a difficult task in retaining the team’s lofty billing in the field featuring more than 30 countries.
“Mahirap ang competition ngayon kasi nag-improve na lahat worldwide. Nag-iimprove din kami based on our practices kaya bulagaan nalang pagdating doon,” said Cristobal.
