    Dragon boat chief reveals two former PH team aspirants among dead in Boracay tragedy

    THE Philippine Canoe Kayak and Dragon Boat Federation (PCKDBF) mourns the deaths of talented paddlers, including two former national team aspirants, in a dragon boat training accident in Boracay.

    PCKDBF president Jonne Go said on Thursday none of the seven who died are part of the national team, although two of them tried out for the Philippine squad this year and showed great potential. Go did not identify the former national team aspirants.

    “It is a sad loss for the sport,” said Go.

    “I extend my condolences to their families.”

    PCKDBF officials led by Go will depart for Boracay on Friday to pay their respects to the seven paddlers.

    “They were friends of ours and the Boracay team are club members,” she said.

    The 21-member Boracay dragon boat team was training for an upcoming international competition when their boat capsized on Wednesday morning off Sitio Lingganay in Barangay Manoc-Manoc.

    Sudden strong waves hit the team which caused their boat to capsize, as per the report made by the Philippine Coast Guard.

    The 14 survivors were immediately brought for treatment at the Saint Gabriel Hospital.
