The Philippine men’s dragon boat team came up just a fraction of a second short of gold in the 2012 Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China.
The 16-man squad settled for the silver medal behind Indonesia in the 500-meter straight finals in Jiulong Lake of Zhaohu Mountain National Forest Park, clocking one minute, 52.927 seconds in a photo finish with the Indons, who were ahead by a mere 0.45 seconds.
Thailand took the bronze medal with a time of 1:54.088 while China finished in fourth place with 1:55.667.
The men’s team that includes Jameson Bumahit, Florence Caro, Nelson Cordova, Raquiel Espinosa, Alex Generalo, Ambrocio Gontinas Jr., Alberto Hugo and Rolando Isidro Jr. finished second in heat two with a time of 1:55.310 with Indonesia topping it with a clocking of 1:53.478.
The team, which also has Hermie Macaranas, Joseph Magno, Diomedes Manalo, Ric Nacional, Ronniel Rafael, Dativo Romares, Ricky Sardena and Alex Sumagaysay, reached the finals via repechage when it beat Japan with a time of 1:57.675
The squad will vie for another medal on Monday when they compete in the men’s 200m straight event.
