ILOILO CITY - Eleven teams are set to vie for supremacy in the men’s, women’s and mixed categories as the DoubleDragon Boat Race 2014 kicks off on Saturday at the Iloilo River here.

Boracay All-Stars Dragon Boat team shoots for a second straight men's championship behind TV personality Kiko Rustia, a veteran dragon boat paddler, in the third staging of the event that is a brain child of Senate President Franklin Drilon.

The showpiece is aimed at helping in the rehabilitation of the Iloilo River.

"The competition aims not only to exhibit the skill and prowess of Filipino paddlers, but also to raise public awareness and concern towards the Iloilo River," Drilon said.

DoubleDragon Properties Corp. chairman and CEO Injap Sia explained that the tournament could help promote Iloilo as a premier sports tourism destination in the country.

"This event is envisioned to promote Iloilo City as a tourism destination which will further stimulate local economic growth not only to Iloilo but the whole nation," said Sia, who is also the founder of the popular Mang Inasal chain of restaurants.
