PSC rebuffs ABAP on plan not to hold boxing event during Games

    May 21, 2013

CHAIRMAN Ricardo Garcia said on Monday the Philippine Sports Commission doesn’t agree with the plan of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) not to hold a boxing tournament during the Philippine National Games slated May 24 to June 2 in Manila.

Garcia’s remarks was in response to reports that ABAP is not inclined to hold a PNG competition to protect other boxers from suffering injuries when they are matched up against more superior fighters belonging to the national pool.

The PNG was organized as a talent identification program and as venue for national athletes to test their skills.

The PSC has required members of the national pool to participate in the meet or be stripped of their monthly stipend.

During the PNG press conference, Garcia said it is the responsibility of ABAP to make boxers free from injury by having quality officiating during the bouts.

“The risk will always be there,” said Garcia. “That’s a challenge for ABAP to protect the boxers and put qualified referees.”

“Since ABAP will run the event, the referees should control the fight. They know when to stop the fight,” said Garcia.

The PSC chairman said the government agency can’t cancel the boxing tournament because boxers who are not members of the national team have already been scheduled to compete in the PNG.

“We can’t agree that walang laban because there are other boxers that are practicing and looking forward to this event,” Garcia said.
