Monico willing to give way to Peping and MVP in chairmanship race

    Oct 12, 2012

MONICO Puentevella is seeking a fresh, four-year mandate as chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), but made known his willingness to give way to either business mogul Manny V. Pangilinan or incumbent Jose “Peping” Cojuangco if they want the position.

Puentevella, who is also president of the Philippine Weightlifting Federation, filed his certificate of candidacy at the POC office last Thursday.

He said he’ll readily back out from the race, but only to give way to either Cojuangco or Pangilinan.

“For the good of Philippine sports, if Cojuangco and MVP wants my position, step aside lang ako. Basta sila lang. Nobody else,” said Puentevella, a former congressman from Bacolod City.

Cojuangco already made open his intention to run for a third straight term as POC president, but has yet to officially submit his certificate of candidacy.

Only two days ago, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Ricky Vargas hinted that Pangilinan is open to oppose Cojuangco’s candidacy provided there are enough numbers from the various national sports associations that will support his candidacy.

There were initial talks that Cojuangco is reaching out to the MVP camp as the former Tarlac congressman wants Pangilinan to be his chairman.
