Legend Greg Louganis arriving in PH for Red Bull Cliff Diving leg

    Mar 19, 2019

DIVING legend Greg Louganis is set to arrive to serve as sports director of the first-ever leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Season 11 to be staged in the country.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist previously served as a judge of the nation-hopping event before stepping into the sports director role following the death of a former rival turned friend.

“I was invited as a judge on the tour years ago,” he said. “Then after the passing of my dear friend and former Olympic competitor Niki Stajkovic, who was the original sports director, Red Bull reached out to me and asked if I could step into the role.”

Louganis will now be part of the Red Bull entourage when the long-running event holds its only Asian stop on April 12 at the Small and Big Lagoons in Miniloc Island, El Nido, Palawan.

“I am honoured to be back this year on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. I look forward to another exciting year,” said Louganis, who is widely regarded as one of the best divers of all time.

“Some of the safety measures we look for is if the diving heights meet the standard requirements for 27 meters for the Men and 21 meters for the Women,” says Louganis. “Also that there is at least 5 meters water depth which the divers would be diving in.”

Louganis starred in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where he placed first on both the platform and springboard events. Four years later in Seoul, shook off a concussion suffered in the preliminary rounds to complete another sweep of the springboard and platform contests.

In the years since, Louganis has established himself as a global icon for civil and LGBT rights.
