Bowling team reinstated after appeal, Philippine athletes bound for SEA Games now at 472

    May 1, 2015

THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has reinstated bowling to the 27th Southeast Asian Games delegation but the players will be competing in Singapore under the care of the Olympic body instead of the Philippine Bowling Congress.

POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco said a 12-man bowling squad has been approved. The POC earlier scratched bowling from the Philippine lineup after the PBC held an election without recognition from the Olympic body.

“Sayang daw ’yung pagod nila,” Cojuangco said, referring to the bowlers. “Pinaliwanag ko na your association has not conducted an election. Binigyan ng POC ng pagkakataon at nagkaliwanagan na. Many of the stakeholders of bowling are now working already to straighten out the situation in bowling.”

The number of Filipino athletes bound for Singapore jumped to 472 following the inclusion of bowling.

Cojuangco rued the country’s failure to produce new top keglers following the success of Paeng Nepomuceno and Bong Coo in the past.

“Sayang itong bowling dahil pang-world class tayo. Pero wala tayong na-dedevelop na bagong player,” said Cojuangco.

Frederick Ong, a gold medalist in the men's singles when bowling was last held in the SEA Games in 2011, is part of the 12-man bowling team.
