    B-Pinoy North Luzon leg fires off in Lingayen

    THE Northern Luzon leg of the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Batang Pinoy kicks off Wednesday at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

    Swimming, athletics and 10 other sports will be played in the week-long meet for athletes aged 15 years old and below.

    Over 1,000 athletes showed up in Tuesday’s brief opening ceremony led by Pangasinan Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr.

    The other sports are arnis, badminton, boxing, chess, karatedo, lawn tennis, taekwondo and table tennis.

    The province, which hosted the Palarong Pambansa five months ago, is fielding 300 athletes, while Alaminos and Dagupan City have entered separate squads.
    They will be challenged by young athletes from Baguio City, Ilocos, La Union, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales.

    The POC-PSC Batang Pinoy Games launched the first of five qualifying legs in Marikina last month. The top athletes the qualifying events advance to the national championship in Iloilo City set Dec. 5-8.

    Oriental Mindoro has been tapped as Southern Luzon qualifying host (Oct.24-27), Cagayan De Oro will hold the Mindanao leg (Nov.7-10) and the Visayas qualifier will be played in Tacloban City, Leyte (Nov.21-24).
