AFTER its success in sending Filipino riders to London, PruLife of UK-Philippines stepped up its bid to develop the sport with the launch of the PruRide PH 2018.
The race is slated to blaze the streets of Bataan, Zambales and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authoirty from January 11 to 14, which will coincide with the PhilCycling’s Philippine National Road Championships.
Dubbed as the PRURide Professional Road Race, the race will be the centerpiece of the near weeklong activity, challenging some of the best riders from the country through a tough 160-kilometer course starting in Subic Bay Freeport Zone up to the historic peak of Mount Samat in Bataan.
The race will also be open to young and aspiring pedalpushers apart from staging professional individual time trial, amateur time trial and the 100-kilometer Gran Frondo.
“We have seen PhilCycling’s active role in keeping cycling alive in the Philippines, whether as a sport or as a way of living. And as Pru Like UK is committed to promote responsible and safe cycling, we are thrilled to be sharing this advocacy with them through PRURide PH 2018,” said Pru Life UK President and Chief Executive Officer Antonio de Rosas.
The said event was welcomed with enthusiasm by the country’s top riders, among them national skipper George Oconer.
“Magiging daan to para mas ma-expose kami saka mas mahahasa yung talent namin. Maganda to kasi nabubuhay ulit yung cycling sa Pilipinas,” said the second generation rider and son of former Olympian cyclist Norberto Oconer.
“Natutuwa po ako sa growing community of cycling, lalo na po dito sa Pilipinas. Syempre ito for the health and wellness of all Filipinos. Magagamit ko rin po ito na preparation for other major races na sasalihan ko lalo na yung Asian Games next year,” said Marella Salamat, who won a gold medal in the women’s individual time trial of the last Singapore Sea Games.
Over 5,000 riders are expected to participate in a line-up of 36 racing activities, which will cater to a wide range of cyclists, from amateur and age-group riders to UCI license holders.
“PruRide PH2018 is the second major cycling festival Pru Life has organized, last year we mounted Pru Life to London, the first ever criterium race in McKinley West to strengthen our commitment to promote health and wellness among Filipinos,” said Allan Tumbaga, Pru Life’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
“Our concern is to make sure is accepted as an alternative mode of transport and the reason why we are holding the PruRide PH 2018 is to also bring in the excitement of Prudential Ride Londan locally,” he added.
