THE local government of San Mateo has passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of the road leading to the San Mateo Sanitary Landfill, also known as Shotgun, for leisure and recreational activities.
The ordinance was passed on Sept. 2 but was noticeably implemented this weekend, based on posts on Facebook groups, as cyclists have already been barred from entering the road.
The Shotgun road is a popular destination for cyclists, newbies and veterans alike, known for its challenging climb.
Vice Mayor Jose Rafael Diaz was said to have received a letter from the International Solid Waste Integrated Management Specialist (ISWIMS) expressing concern over the traffic situation in the four-kilometer stretch of road.
The ISWIMS also said in the letter that accidents in the area are “attributable to heavy four-wheeled vehicles avoiding cyclists, motorcycle riders, vendors, peddlers illegally parked vehicles, and those engaging in leisure activities in the said area.
