THE local government of Pililla said it will hold organizers accountable for staging an unsanctioned cycling race on Sunday that drew crowds, a violation of the safety protocols during the pandemic.
In its official Facebook page, the municipality of Pililla said the organizers of the Valentine's Day race, apparently involving a bike shop, did not have permission for the event because mass gatherings is still not allowed.
The Facebook post didn’t mention details, but some comments on its page pointed to the Giro De San Valentin event which ran from nearby Jala-Jala, Rizal to Mabitac, Laguna.
The event drew hundreds of spectators, most of them cyclists, to watch from roadside.
The LGU issued a reminder that cycling is only allowed as an exercise activity during the health crisis, and not as a competitive event.
“As much as we value the importance of the biking community, especially in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle as well as helping to promote tourism in our town, we still hold the safety of everyone in the highest regard and we do not wish to endanger Pilillanons and participants alike. Holding big events and congregating in large groups is still not allowed at this time,” wrote the LGU in its Better Pililla Facebook page.
“The LGU Pililla is already looking into this and will hold legally those who violated local and national protocols,” it added.
