KIM Atienza is hoping authorities can open the area around Okada Manila and Solaire Resorts and Casino to cyclists during the early-morning hours.

The popular broadcaster and cycling enthusiast was one of those saddened by the decision to close down what he described as a 'world-class 4km biking loop,' supposedly due to its proximity to a newly opened quarantine facility.

But instead of a total closure, 'Kuya Kim' suggested that perhaps the popular bikers' destination can be opened for two hours every morning for the use of cyclists from Metro Manila and surrounding areas.

“The Okada loop was too good to last, now we are disallowed from cycling the world class 4km loop,” wrote Atienza, who tagged fellow cycling enthusiast and former Senator JV Ejercito in his Instagram post.

“There is a healthy compromise. I sincerely pray [Okada Manila] and [Solaire Resorts and Casino] allow cyclists to ride the loop 6 to 8 a.m. when there are no cars, then close the area to cyclists the whole day,” added Atienza.

Aside from the newly opened quarantine facility, there is a prevailing sentiment in the cycling community that the route was closed to cyclists because social distancing rules are being regularly ignored in the area, particularly infront of the Okada Manila signage where hundreds pose for photos.

There have also been incidents in the past where cyclists figured in fights and angered motorists by forming pelotons in the middle of the road.

But Atienza believes that the window hour will be beneficial to all.

“A two-hour carless window in the morning would be a great gift to cyclists from all over Metro Manila,” Atienza added.
