THE Ronda Pilipinas title is slowly slipping from John Mark Galedo’s grasp.
Already off to a slow start in the multi-stage bike race, the 25-year-old Kalookan City rider took another blow when he suffered a spill during a practice ride in Cebu on Wednesday afternoon.
Galedo and his Roadbike Philippines teammates were riding at a fast pace in Mactan when his chains snapped, causing the two-time champion to lose his balance and crash to the pavement.
“Medyo malakas yung impact, wasak nga yung helmet ko,” said Galedo, who suffered bruises and swellings in his shoulder area.
“OK naman ako, kaunting gasgas lang ito. Kahit magbuhat pa ko ng ilang kilo, walang problema.”
Although he was quick to dismiss fears that the accident could affect his title-retention campaign, his performance so far says otherwise.
From just five minutes behind the overall lead, Galedo has slipped to 12 minutes and 36 seconds behind new leader and longtime rival Irish Valenzuela of LPGMA American Vinyl.
Galedo’s pregnant wife, Grace, could not hide his anxiety over the incident.
“Mas importante sa akin yung safety niya. Hindi ko hangad na makuha niya ulit yung korona, umuwi lang siyang safe. Masaya na ko”, said Grace who was advised by his doctor not to get stressed as she is having a difficult pregnancy.
Against doctor’s orders, Grace revealed that she will follow her husband to Baguio to be at her side come the awarding ceremonies.
“Pero kaya ni Mark yan. Sana mailapit pa niya yung oras nya,” Grace said.
