THOUSANDS of cyclists are expected to join the Philippines’ most famous annual bike caravan, the 15th Tour of the Fireflies, as it opened walk-in and online registrations for the November 24 event.
This year’s theme, “Let’s Just Ride Together,” is a call to action that encourages cyclists from various groups and riding different types of bicycles to come together in support of the advocacy for a cleaner and healthier Metro Manila.
For this year, the tour route will pass through seven cities in Metro Manila – Pasig, Marikina, San Juan, Taguig, Makati, Mandaluyong and Quezon City. The route is still being finalized together with other agencies and local government units (LGU).
Once finalized, the route will be posted on the website http://www.fireflybrigade.org/.
The estimated length of the route is 20 kilometers which will take about 3-4 hours to complete depending on the weather and road conditions.
The start/end Point is at Tiendesitas, Frontera Drive near C5, Pasig City with assembly time at 5:30 a.m. followed by a ride-out time of 6:30 a.m.
The tour, organizers explained, is not a racing event but a “fun, no-frills, bicycle ride around Metro Manila." Pacer marshals will control the pace to a leisurely speed of 12-15 kph.
There will be hydration stations in key areas along the route for cyclists to re-group and re-hydrate.
Firefly Brigade, the event organizer, said the cycling caravan attracts thousands of cyclists every year from all walks of life and all ages who go on a bike tour around the cities of Metro Manila to promote cycling as an environment friendly and healthy form of transportation around the metropolis.
The event has captured the public’s attention for the whimsical and colorful attire of the cyclists as much as their advocacy that is summed up by the “B.E.S.T.” philosophy, or “Bicycles as Environmentally Sustainable Transportation."
Their main advocacies are to organize Critical Mass Ride (CMR); install provisions for bike parking in public/private areas and a campaign for road sharing.
All participants, who can register as individuals or as part of a group, will be required to sign a waiver and quit claim in the registration form. Children below 18 years old must be accompanied by a registered adult participant and all riders are required to wear a helmet.
The Tour of the Fireflies is open to everyone for a minimal fee of P100 which will support the operations and other projects of the Firefly Brigade. For additional cost, a participant can purchase a commemorative leg band, racing shirt or jersey.
