DANIEL Caluag won a gold medal for the Philippines in the 8th BMX Asian Continental Championships in Singapore.
The 2012 London Olympian topped the men’s elite race on Sunday with a time of 29.951 seconds to give the country its first-ever gold medal in the Asian BMX event.
The Fil-American beat Tatsumi Matsushita of Japan, who finished second with 30.306 seconds. Jukia Yoshimura, also from Japan, took third with a clocking of 30.448 seconds.
Nino Marin Eday, an up-and-coming Filipino BMX rider, also competed in Singapore and finished 16th.
Caluag, who traces his roots in Bulacan, was one of 11 Filipinos who qualified for last year’s Olympics but he struggled in his event and finished dead last among eight riders in the heats.
Caluag, who decided to suit up for the Philippines after competing in the United States circuit, was the first Filipino cyclist to ride in the Olympics since Domingo Villanueva and Norberto Oconer competed in the road race in 1992.
