UFC postpones Fight Night Manila card due to withdrawal of injured headliner BJ Penn
UFC Fight Night Manila has been postponed after BJ Penn withdrew from the main event against Ricardo Lamas due to injury.

WITH just over a week left, the UFC announced that it will reschedule its Fight Night Manila event planned for October 15 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The UFC made the announcement on its site on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) with no replacement in sight for co-headliner BJ Penn.

The former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion was forced to withdraw from the main event bout with Ricardo Lamas due to an injury he suffered during training.

"I suffered a rib injury in training and I apologize to the fans in Manila who were expecting to watch me compete," the jiu jitsu ace said. “I hope to be back in the Octagon soon.”

The UFC said fighters in the other cards affected by the cancellation will be compensated and will be rebooked at upcoming UFC events in the near future.

It marks a first for the world's largest MMA league to postpone a non-PPV card, and no date has been determined for the resumption of the Manila event. Since the company's 2016 calendar has already been finalized, it's safe to say that the UFC could make its return to the country next year.

"SMLEI and UFC will continue to work together in the future to deliver exciting live events for fans,”  Edgar Tejerero, President of SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc. said.

Fans who have purchased tickets to the event were advised to "seek refunds at the point of purchase."
