WORLD No. 4 Wesley So, a former member of the Philippine team, won the Masters title of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Neterlands on Sunday.
The US Grandmaster, playing the black pieces, defeated GM Ian Nepomniachtchi in 28 moves of a Trompovsky Opening in the 13th and final round to finish with nine points, edging world champion GM Magnus Carlsen in the leaderboard for the title.
Carlsen settled for second place as he drew his match against GM Sergey Karjakin in the 14-player event.
“I've achieved one of my goals which is to win this very prestigious tournament,” So was quoted as saying.
