FILIPINO Grandmaster Wesley So continued his winning run in the Canadian chess circuit by ruling the 2012 Quebec Open Chess Championship at the College Brebeuf in Montreal on Sunday.
The native of Bacoor, Cavite defeated IM Leonid Gerzhoy and GM Bator Sambuev of the host country in the last two rounds to finish with an unbeaten record of 7.5 points on six wins and three draw in the nine-round event. He finished half a point ahead of runner-up GM Lazaro Bruzon of Cuba who had 7.0 points.
So went home with the top purse of US$4,000.
It was the second straight title in Canada for the young Filipino GM following his triumph in the Crown Section of the 2012 Toronto International Chess Championship two weeks ago at the Annex Chess Club in Toronto.
He earlier settled for third overall in the 40th Annual World Open Chess Championship at the Sheraton City Center Hotel in Philadelphia last month.
So spearheads Team Philippines in the 2012 World Chess Olympiad on August 27 to September 10 in Istanbul, Turkey.
