SANDER Severino recently became a world champion in online chess when he captured the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) Online Championship.
Severino earned 8.5 points to wrest the title in the rapid online chess competition after nine rounds of a Swiss system tournament, beating Andrei Gurbanov of Israel and Andrei Obodchuk of Russia.
A total of 124 players competed in the online meet.
Severino, who has muscle dystrophy, won four gold medals in the Asian Paragames in 2018, the most bemedalled Filipino athlete in the competition.
“It’s been my dream to become a world champion,” wrote Severino in an interview with Sunstar Bacolod.
