GM MARK PARAGUA solidified his position on top of the Philippine Sports Commission Cup International Chess Championships after scoring a victory over GM Darwin Laylo Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Paragua improved to five points halfway to the nine-round Swiss system tournament.
The Filipino GM defeated Mongolian Fide Master Gombosuren Munkhgal Wednesday to take hold of the top spot.
Fide Master Haridas Pascua beat FM Randy Segarra to grab solo second with 4.5 points, while Russian Super GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov, GM-elect Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa, IM Rolando Nolte, and FM Hamed Nouro share third place.
The winner will receive $6,000 out of the $30,000 pot money at stake in the tournament.
