Pinoys continue rise with victory over South Africa in Chess Olympiad

THE Philippine team rose to 23rd from 43rd spot in the open division of the Chess Olympiad after a 3.5-.5 win over South Africa in the fifth round in Baku, Azerbaijan.

GM Julio Catalino Sadorra won with white over GM Kenny Solomon in 63 moves on Board One, while GMs Eugene Torre and Rogelio Barcenilla won over International Masters on Boards Three and Four.

Torre beat Watu Kobese and Barcenilla too the full point after a 106-move match against IM Donovan Van den Heever.

GM John Paul Gomez split the match with IM Daniel Cawdery.

The Philippines faces 12th-ranked Norway in round six.

The Filipinas blanked Algeria to move to 27th spot in the women’s division.

Women’s International Masters Janelle Mae Frayna, Jan Jodilyn Fronda, and Catherine Secopito, and Women’s Fide Master Shania Mae Mendoza won.

The women chessers face Mexico in the next round.
