Philippine chess teams score opening-round sweeps in Chess Olympiad

THE Philippines men’s and women’s teams opened their campaign in the 42nd Chess Olympiad with sweeps on Friday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Filipinos blanked Jersey, 4-0, in the Open division while the Filipinas team also scored a sweep over Netherlands Antilles on the women's side.

Grandmaster John Paul Gomez beat Paul Wojciechowski, while GM Eugene Torre won over Krzysztof.

GM Rogelio Barcenilla overcame Garry Forbes and International Master Paulo Bersamina defeated Graham Mooney.

The Filipino woodpushers joined 64 other teams that swept their opening assignments.

WIM Janelle Mae Frayna won over WFM Ailen Oriana Mena, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda beat Mariana Sanchez, Christy Lamiel Bernales downed Arzy Zahia Salim-Moussa, and WIM Catherine Secopito overcame Taqesyah Marcos.

The Filipinas and 56 other womens teams won their opening matches.

The Philippines next takes on Paraguay in the Open.
