ASIA’S first Grandmaster Eugene Torre proved that he still has it, winning the 2023 Guam International Open Chess Tournament at the Dusit Beach Resort in Tumon.

Torre went unbeaten in nine games to rule the competition that he already won in 2015, according to the Guam Daily Post.

    Torre makes experience count

“So happy to duplicate this achievement,” Torre told the Guam Daily Post. “Almost in all the games I had to be careful and not overconfident … My long experience has helped me and also I tried to discipline myself, healthy eating, no vices, all these things.”

He completed the sweep by beating CM (candidate master) Rogelio Orio in the ninth round.
