Filipina woodpushers stun Georgia, move to 29th spot in Chess Olympiad

THE Philippine women’s team beat Georgia, 2.5-1.5, in the second round of the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Woman International Master (WIM) Jan Jodilyn Fronda defeated Grandmaster (GM) Bela Khotenashvili on Board Two to highlight the Philippines’ victory that put them in 29th spot after the second day of competitions.

WIM Catherine Secopito also won over IM Salome Melia on Board Four, while WIM Janelle Mae Frayna drew with GM Nana Dzagnidze.

Christy Lamiel Bernales lost to WGM Nino Batsiashvili for the Filipina woodpushers’ lone defeat.

Meanwhile, the Filipinos slid to 50th in the Open after a 2.5-1.5 loss to Paraguay.

GM Eugene Torre beat Jose Fernando Cubas on Board Three but GM John Paul Gomez and GM Rogelio Barcenilla lost to GM Axel Bachmann and GM Zenon Franco Ocampos, respectively.

GM Julio Catalino Sadorra drew with GM Neuris Delgado Ramirez on Board One.
