THE University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe was half a point short of a podium finish in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition on Saturday.
The España-based cheerdancers, who were third to perform, wowed the crowd as they showcased a fierce and sassy routine that featured Beyoncé’s hits Crazy in Love and Run the World (Girls) on Saturday at the MOA Arena in front of 20, 117 audience.
“Well after kasi the performance, I was really happy and parang sabi ko, a podium finish would just be a bonus,” said UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe coach Mark Chaiwalla. “‘Yun talaga ‘yung naramdaman ko right after the performance.”
“Kasi first of all ang hinihiling ko lang naman ay maging safe ‘yung mga bata, and then secondly is that they would go out of the mats happy,” he added.
But after seeing the scoresheets, Chaiwalla could only sigh in defeat.
Salinggawi finished fourth place with a total of 638 points, behind Adamson University Pep Squad (638.5).
In the complete tally of points, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe was third in dance (346), third in tumbling (78.5), fifth in stunts (76.5), third in tosses (75), fourth in pyramids 72) and it had 10 penalties and deductions.
“My personal na nararamdaman now, medyo talagang nanghinayang ako when I saw the scoresheet because of the difference in the podium finish is just 0.5,” said Chaiwalla.
While other teams remained in the mats after the announcement of winners, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe did not stay long on the mats as members were seen crying and hugging each other.
A handful of reporters asked Chaiwalla if the team was disappointed with the results but he insisted that they were just sad.
“Syempre they were sad siguro, pero hindi naman disappointed,” he said. “Syempre a podium finish would mean something to them.”
Supporters of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe vented out their frustration on social media.
“Well I’m very thankful kasi despite not landing in the podium this year, despite just a 0.5 difference, they still appreciate us,” said Chaiwalla. “Kasi lahat naman ng pinagta-trabahuhan namin is not for us, it’s for all those who appreciate us no matter what.”
