UP Pep Squad aims to bounce back in UAAP cheerdance with 'never before seen' routine

    Sep 14, 2014

    [Fifth of a series]

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines is going all out to reclaim its crown in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition.

And proof that it is leaving no stone unturned in its bid for another run at a championship, the eight-time champions gave the UP community a peek of their routine for Sunday’s competition during a pep rally at the College of Human Kinetics in Diliman on Thursday night.

Trying to showcase something new and different for this year's competition, the UP Pep Squad will parade a routine inspired by its vision of equality.

“Equality, it's not really a theme, it's a vision. We want to share a message of equality among everything,” UP Pep Squad captain Audrey Muñoz shared to

“Expect that we will show something new and different. Hindi pa (ito) nagagawa ng UP and ng kahit anong school sa UAAP,” she added.

Although regaining the title which it lost to National University last season meant eclipsing University of Santo Tomas as the winningest team in the 20-year history of the cheerdance competition, Munoz said the team is really more focused on perfecting its routine rather than going for the record.

UST and UP are tied with eight championship each.

“Basta ang iniisip namin na maging super duper clean run, kasi last year sobrang daming hulog. Ngayon we aim to prove ourselves again, 'yung championship and 'yung record gusto rin namin pero mas aim namin 'yung perfect run,” she said.

The loss to NU last season also denied UP a fourth straight cheerdance title.

But for Munoz, a fourth year Sports Science student, the loss only made the team hungrier for this year's competition.

“Masakit na nawala na naman ang streak, we have to start all over again,” she said. “From that day on, we were so hungry for this year.”

Excited to bounce back, the UP Pep squad skipper vowed to put on a performance that will wow not only their supporters but all cheerdance fans as well.

“Expect na malinis na routine ipapakita sa Sunday,” said Muñoz. “Basta at the end of the performance masa-satisfy sila sa napanood nila.”
