UNIVERSITY of the Philippines bagged four gold medals in dominating the cheerleading competitions of the Philippine National Games on Sunday night at the Rizal Coliseum.
The UP Pep Squad, eight-time UAAP cheerdance champion, stamped its class in the gymnastics event by winning half of the eight categories at stake.
The Diliman-based school took the cheer mixed crown by beating Centro Escolar University and Lyceum for the gold, and then tabbed the cheerdance event at the expense of University of Santo Tomas and Miriam College, which settled for the silver and bronze, respectively.
UP also captured the gold in the partner stunts category, besting Zamboanga and Polytechnic University of the Philippines, before adding the group stunts mixed plum by overcoming UST and CEU.
Assistant team captain Insigne Bien said the team is coming off a stint in the Asian Cheerdance Open, where it finished second in partner stunts, third in group stunts, and fifth in cheer mixed.
“Kung ano ‘yung ginawa namin sa Japan, ‘yun din ang ginawa namin sa PNG,” said Bien.
He also said the UP Pep Squad is already beginning its preparations this early for the UAAP cheerdance competition in the coming season.
“Gagawin po namin ang lahat. Nagsisimula na kami sa mga stunts at sa pyramid namin,” Bien said.
In other events, Poveda won the group stunts all female category, with Miriam College and CEU finishing second and third, respectively.
Rhufa’s Army 1 and 2 tabbed the gold and silver medals in the group stunts all-male, with Letran settling for the bronze.
Emilio Aguinaldo College claimed the team acro event at the expense of UST 1 and UST 2.
CEU won the team cheer all-female title.
