IT’S that time of the year again when basketball action briefly gives way to the highly-awaited UAAP Cheerdance Competition.

This year, National University will be going for a third straight championship while seven other teams try to play the spoilers’ role amid a festive atmosphere at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines are the winningest teams with eight titles each in the 21-year history of the cheerdance competition, but NU has established itself as the team to beat this year.

“We make sure po talaga that everyday we try a new stunt or skill, we hit it and make it consistent everytime. So you can expect po a new and improved Salinggawi Dance Troupe and a much cleaner routine,” said Cruz.

“And yes po we are more motivated to achieve a podium finish again this year. We work extra hard and put more effort and soul sa routine.”

Cruz said there is pressure to win another championship, but they try not to think of it too much.

“Lagi po namin iniisip muna na i-hit po muna ng maayos and malinis ’yung routine and alam po namin na He will give us what we deserve,” she said.

“Meron naman po (pressure) kasi syempre gusto din po namin mahigitan ’yung nagawa namin last year. Pero mas focused lang po talaga kami sa routine mismo before po namin isipin ‘yung place,” said Cruz, noting that NU and UP are still the teams to beat.
