IT’S that time of the year again when basketball action briefly gives way to the highly-awaited UAAP Cheerdance Competition.
This year, National University will be going for a third straight championship while seven other teams try to play the spoilers’ role amid a festive atmosphere at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.
University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines are the winningest teams with eight titles each in the 21-year history of the cheerdance competition, but NU has established itself as the team to beat this year.
Let's take a look at the competition in this third installment of an eight-part series:
Adamson Pep Squad
One place off the podium last year, Adamson believes it has what it takes to do to break the top three.
Last year’s Navy-inspired routine got them fourth place, and Adamson is convinced can move up the ladder by adding some difficulty to their moves.
National University, University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas occupied the podium spots.
Adamson has not won the competition, its best finish second 14 years ago, and the team is keeping the targets modest.
“Ineexpect namin na magplace kami this year sa top three kasi matagal na kaming uhaw sa panalo,” said Adamson team captain Juan Carlo Estelita.
“Placing fourth last year nag-double time kami sa training para makapasok sa top three,” he added.
“Wino-work namin ’yung difficulty na ’yun for a better score and output than last year,” he said.
Estelita said the San Marcelino-based squad immediately went back to practice after the Season 77 show and now they are confident they can take a medal finish.
“Expect nila is ’yung difficulty ng routine is much harder and mas malinis than last year,” he said.
“Katulad ng ibang school, nagdadaan kami sa hard conditioning para magawa namin ang mga ini-aim naming skills,” he continued.
The Adamson skipper does not want to focus on any team, saying they are simply determined not to put all their efforts to waste.
“Lahat ng team tini-treat namin na magiging mabigat na kalaban sa podium. Kailangan namin paninindigan lahat ng gagawin namin para hindi masayang ang mga pagod at pinaghirapan namin sa isang taon,” said Estelita.
