UAAP Cheerdance: Adamson Pep vows to surpass championship performance in title defense

    Nov 16, 2018

THE Adamson Pep Squad is showing its wild and fierce side but will be defending its crown without any expectations when the much-anticipated UAAP Cheerdance Competition 2018 fires off on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After steering the first Cheerdance title of the school with a groovy OPM 80s-themed performance last year, Adamson Head Coach Jam Lorenzo admitted that it will be a great honor to establish a dynasty in the competition just like what UST, UP and NU have done before.

“Kung ibibigay sa amin ni Lord yun why not diba? It’s a good thing for the school and the cheerleaders na rin naman,” he said. “Hopefully kung ipagkakaloob sa amin yun na magtuloy tuloy yung winning streak ng Adamson sa cheerdance competition every year, I think we’ll be blessed if we have that.”

But just like how they won the hearts of the people last year, Lorenzo is having the same approach without any expectations and just to perfectly execute their fiercer and faster routine for this year.

“This season, just like as last year, wala naman kaming ineexpect. So kahit nagdedefend kami ngayon walang expectations but for us to pull off our routine,” said the former Adamson PEP Squad member from 2007 to 2012 turned coach.

Co-captain Joy Sumalpong, who missed last year’s competition after she sustained a fractured ankle three months before the tourney, promises that her team will continue to win the hearts of many.

“Our best will lead us something very great. We will still win hearts over trophies and we will be making everyone proud from last year,” she said.

A lot of opportunities came to the pep after bagging its first-ever title in the 22nd staging of UAAP Cheerdance. They won three golds and one silver in the Asia Cheerleading Invitational Championships last summer in Singapore, their recruitment got better and now heading into the 2018 Cheerdance Competion, all eyes are on them.

“Hindi nga kami sanay eh. Kasi talagang inaabangan na kami this year especially sa social media,” Lorenzo said. “Ngayon wala naman kaming ibang goal kung hindi matayo yung routine namin and definitely yung pressure andun yan hindi naman mawawala sa kahit anong competition yan.”

That’s why Lorenzo is putting premium on chemistry and humility.

“Ever since na nagstart ako magcoach talagang ineenforce ko yung discipline kasi pag nandiyan yung discipline tsaka humility ng team susunod na lahat yun,” he said.

Janmar Manloza, the graduating co-captain of the the squad, is assuring their coach that they will apply the discipline and humility enforced by their coach.

“Natutunan namin siguro nung nagchampion kami is stay humble lang kung ano kayo dati ganoon pa rin walang magbabago,”Manloza said. “Naglevel up talaga yung confidence namin dahil sa nangyari last year.”

“Kung last year nagandahan kayo sa performance namin siguro ngayon mas hihigitan pa namin yung last year,” he added. “Expect there will be an extensive vibes at the same time andoon na rin yung relaxing vibes sa performance namin.”
