IT’S that time of the year again when basketball action briefly gives way to the highly-awaited UAAP Cheerdance Competition.

This year, National University will be going for a third straight championship while seven other teams try to play the spoilers’ role amid a festive atmosphere at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines are the winningest teams with eight titles each in the 21-year history of the cheerdance competition, but NU has established itself as the team to beat this year.

Let's take a look at the competition in this third installment of an eight-part series:

Tougher stunts and more daring lifts is what Ateneo is looking to pull to wow fans and earn the judges’ nods.

The Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion is looking to make a big leap  after bringing up the rear two straight years.

Team captain Myca Maala believes that with a more difficult routine they will be able to rise.

“We aimed for much harder stunts and pyramids this year compared to last year,” she said.

“Last March, we joined NCC (National Cheerdace Competition) but for group stunts only. This prepared most of our veterans for the harder stunts we aim to hit for CDC,” she added.

“We're really hoping that everyone will like our routine because for us, everything in our routine is really great and spectacular — theme, stunts, pyramids,” she continued.

For Maala the daily sacrifice is enough motivation for them to bring out their best on competition day.

“The fact that we have trained so hard for this competition is already a motivation for the team,” she said.

“We know that we have to make all the late night trainings and all the pain worth it.”

“The team is also so very close this year and I believe that each and everyone of us won't let each other down,” she added.
