Senator Grace Poe hopes UP Pep Squad's show of unity can rub off on other Maroons teams

    Sep 14, 2014

SENATOR Grace Poe showed up in her patented white dress during the UAAP Cheerdance Competition Sunday before a cheering crowd of 22,093 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, but she made no effort to hide her true color.

Poe was there to support her alma mater, University of the Philippines, which unfortunately, failed to regain its crown after finishing runner-up behind back-to-back champion National University Pep Squad.

Despite the setback, Poe was beaming with proud for State U, whose performance she described as ‘almost perfect.’

“They are so disciplined, sabay-sabay talaga sila, I think they did almost perfect,” Poe told “The important thing is the team spirit of UP.”

The soft-spoken lady senator noted that it has been the school’s trademark to deliver a flawless routine since the UP Pep Squad always works as one.

But Poe could only hope the pep squad’s aim for perfection can also be emulated in other UAAP sports.

“Oo naman, pag dating sa team spirit may unity talaga ang UP. Kailangan lang ng support,” she said. “I hope that it equates to the other sports.”

The runner-up finish by UP this year meant the school remained tied with University of Santo Tomas as the winningest teams in the 20-year history of the cheerdance competition, both with eight titles.

The UST Salinggawi finished third behind NU and UP as the Espana-based school made it back to the podium for the first time in a long while.
