DESPITE a couple of falls, National University scored its third straight title in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

A Stone Age-inspired performance started impressively with daring stunts but had glaring missteps in front of 25,388 spectators, with some of the pyramid and stunt formations never completed.

University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which last won a title in 2006, had a jungle-inspired routine and took second place after winding up third last year.

University of the Philippines Pep Squad settled for the third place after a near-flawless performance.

UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe also won the Group Stunts, NU Pep Squad came in second and Far Eastern University was third.

The NU dancers dominated all but one department and garnered a total of 668 points with only six penalties and deductions.

NU Pep Squad Ghicka Bernabe said she was confident they would win a third straight title even though they needed to change the theme a month before the performance when they found out that they prepared the same theme as UST.

“First theme talaga namin is African. A month ago nagpalit kami ng theme and nagustuhan naman ng tao and ’yun pa ang nagdala sa amin sa three-peat,” said Bernabe.

“Honestly, ’yung pinapakita ng members ko flawless… apat na pyramid ang nilabas ko eh alam ko ’yung tatlong pyramid namin lalaban kaya alam ’di basta mawawala sa amin ito,” said the 27-year old NU coach.

“Ang gusto namin i-hit is sa lahat ng segment kailangan No.1 kami,” she added.

UST placed first in dance department and had a total tally of 651.5 points.

“We are blessed to be first runner up,” said UST coach Roman Pagaduan, who is on his fourth year as mentor of the Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

“We just expected na makapag-run ng maayos in respect and love to the Thomasian community.”
