ARELLANO University ended the NCAA Season 90 with a bang, wowing the crowd and getting the thumbs up from the judges to rule the cheerleading competition on Tuesday at the MOA Arena.

The AU Pep Squad claimed its first cheerdance title ended the five-year reign of the Perpetual Help Altas Perps Squad, who settled for second place.

College of St. Benilde claimed the final spot on the podium.

AU, runner-up for two straight years, bagged P100,000 after getting 405.5 points from the seven judges, edging the Perps Squad by a full point.

The difficulty of the group stunts and pyramids were the strongest points of the Legarda-based school and coach Lucky San Juan praised his squad for all the hard work.

“Pinuso talaga nila, sabi ko sa mga bata ’kayo na ’yan tapos na ang part naming coaches, tinrabaho nila, sinugurado nila ang bawat galaw,” said San Juan.

Arellano was first to perform out of the nine schools— as San Sebastian skipped the competition — and San Juan was pleased the squad made a lasting impression.

“Nakakakaba talaga na No. 1 performer kami pero sabi ko nga sa kanila, ‘gawin niyo standard ang gagawin natin, pag natabunan ka ng mga susunod kakalimutan ka na kaya bigyan mo ang judges na Arellano is the best,’” he said.

The Perps Squad, which had several falls, received P75,000 cash prize, while College of St. Benilde received 359.5 points worth P50,000.

Jose Rizal University placed fourth (353), followed by Emilio Aguinaldo (344.5), Letran (332.5), Lyceum (322), Mapua (301.5) and San Beda (291).
